Taiwan Investors Target Agricultural Development in Hainan

Taiwan investors have helped establish 400 businesses specializing in agricultural development in Hainan, a subtropical island province of south China.

Taiwan investors have rented a total of 13,333 hectares of landand invested 220 million US dollars in agricultural businesses, which employ 35,000 local farmers.

Hainan, where the climate is ideal for developing tropical and subtropical crops, has been designated a pilot zone for agricultural cooperation across the Taiwan Strait since March 1999.

In recent years, investors from Taiwan have started up businesses ranging from fruits, flowers, vegetables and aquatic products to processing of farm produce, timber and beverages.

The number of farm produce processing businesses with Taiwan investment in Hainan, one of China's special economic zones, has exceeded 70.
