Presumably "America's oldest ally" refers to the support that the French provided to the colonials in the 1776 War of Yankee Aggression.
I've always thought that a good retort to the old "If it wasn't for us, you'd be speaking German" crack would be for a Frenchman to point out that if it wasn't for them, the Americans would be speaking English today.
