Economic Recovery Remains Muted Everywhere in USA

Economic recovery remains muted nearly everywhere in the USA.

One is hard pressed to identify any local economies enjoying stellar economic growth. The one exception is southeast Florida, where capital flight from South America is stimulating the economy. Southern California is stable.

Other areas still expanding are some of the smaller western economies that benefit from rising commodity prices and stable local tourism.

Similarly, there are few local economies still in deep recession, although exceptions are easier to find in this case and include Seattle, Atlanta, Denver, San Francisco and Boston.

Arguably, the weakest region is now the Northeast, where much of the region remains in recession, struggling with cutbacks among securities and brokerages, software and electronics, telecommunications equipment and services, and state government (see chart).

In the Midwest, Michigan and Ohio are still contracting.

In the Southeast, Georgia's economy is mired in recession. It is the poorest performing state in the nation in terms of job growth, with little sign of improvement. Missouri follows close behind Georgia.

Finally, Colorado has seen considerable declines recently in its broad telecommunications industry, compounding weaknesses in air transport and electronics manufacturing.

Similarly, Utah's electronics manufacturers are dormant, and cuts also have been made in the area's back-office service operations.

Washington suffers from cutbacks at Boeing's production plants around Puget Sound.

Weakness from the tech falloff extends south to California's Bay Area.
