Sometimes reification is quite real. There are states in the world which are quite decent, especially in the EU, but the US Federal state is not democratically elected, it's run by two equally corrupt parties, guarded by impenetrable phalanxes of lobbyists, consultants, and related vermin, and its foreign policies have bombed, blasted, impoverished, neoliberalized, and otherwise made life a living hell for billions of Third World citizens.
But the might of the EU and East Asia is real and growing and that's a reason to hope with the head and not just the heart. Put another way, even the most rabid anti-Americanism is all too American; we need new and creative post-Americanisms.
