The Bay Area has been slowly (but surely) demilitarized over the last 20
years, probably in no small part due to things like the Brian Willson
event from 1987.  San Francisco was once practically a "navy town" with
bases from the rest of the armed forces, as well.  It's down to
practically nothing now.

I don't think it's a coincidence.
