For the record, Bush Sr. was defeated not by ant "anti-war movement" (his popularity spred after the Persian Gulf War), but by the liberal-centrist Clinton who successfully appealed to mainstream population.

Life is full of contraditions and people learned to cognitively deal with them. People do not act on perceived contradictions. They act if they see that something positive with a promise to produce tangible changes for the better in their lives is withing their reach.
