Seems like it, yeah. I was living in a small town and everything I needed (except for grocery shopping) was within walking distance: college where I taught, my son's school, video store, bank, etc. I borrowed a car once a week for grocery shopping. I probably walked, on average 3 miles /day. Nothing heroic...just plain walking. I also noticed that whenever I go to Europe...and walk a lot....I lose a minimum of five lbs in a few weeks. Also, my mother, who was bone-thin in Europe (and walked a lot) has been carrying 30-40 extra lbs since she came the U.S.
