Besides Joanna's excellent suggestion, another way to divide up those whose hand is extended is between those contributions which are deductible from taxes and those which are not. We have given a lot of money away over the years -- but almost none of it was deductible.
(Some left political causes have found a way to make contributions to them deductible, and that does not remove them from the list of useful contributions. But much political activity remains to be funded.)
