I think a better comparison is with Conor Cruise
O'Brien.  Both H. and O'Brien are former socialists
driven back to liberalism by, among other things,
their experience with "terrorism".  And in both cases,
an element of their former viewpoint (a militant
secularism -- more pronounced in Hitchens' case) both
persists and helps to reinforce their new opinions.
