yeah, i agree. i do think we might take care, however, to think about why we'd say something is the greatest pleasure on earth while simulataneously talking about how affordable it is.
again, not to make joanna feel guilty: we live in a dirty world. it prompted me to think about and contrast it with something i'd heard before: a feminist bragging about how she paid $5/hr for three housekeepers to come in for an hour and straighten: put dishes in machine, make bed, quick vacuum, wipe down counters, etc. which then reminded me of my friend and the rickshaw ride, Ehrenreich on maids, and then a looksee into the differences between maids, fast food, pedicures. Was hoping someone had something to crit about the stuff!
as for the suggestion that this about making people feel guilty, here's a thought:
why do you suppose it is that critiques of gender privilege are NOT read as demands for men to feel guilty about the fact that they happened to be born men?
