Some background on the guy: crankyness aside, his effort to get the US psychoanalytic mainstream to take object relations theory has been excellent and, within the context of institutional politics, brave. During the 70s, 80s and for much of the 90s he was about the only big shot in US psychoanalysis who found anything positive to say about Melanie Klein's work, and he took a lot of shit for it. However, he's done alright in the International Psychoanalytic Association, making the presidency. His political leanings are pretty questionable -- e.g. I recall a report that he apparently was pissed off about the efforts of some Argentinian analysts to challenge local association leadership that had compromised itself with the junta.
