Some background on the guy: crankyness aside, his effort to get the US
psychoanalytic mainstream to take object relations theory has been excellent
and, within the context of institutional politics, brave. During the 70s,
80s and for much of the 90s he was about the only big shot in US
psychoanalysis who found anything positive to say about Melanie Klein's
work, and he took a lot of shit for it. However, he's done alright in the
International Psychoanalytic Association, making the presidency. His
political leanings are pretty questionable -- e.g. I recall a report that he
apparently was pissed off about the efforts of some Argentinian analysts to
challenge local association leadership that had compromised itself with the
junta.
