There are many issues about the hostage crisis included the ones cited below - that remain unresolved. However, how it benefited the Russians to keep the war going is not convincing (at least to me). With or without the crisis, the war would have continued pretty much as has over the past three years it a lucrative business that kills innocents on both sides. The security forces answer to no one there even doubts how much control Putin has over them. The security forces are a business in Russia after all. Their involvement in the economy is breath-taking. One this is clear though, the security forces (including the police) were probably paid off as the terrorist approached Moscow and while in Moscow.
