My daughter, age 13, who has excellent instincts, but insists that socialism is a pipe dream, was musing in the car the other day, after a discussion about a number of concrete things in which this was a subtext, said, "I wish it wasn't all about money. But I don't see how else things could be." jks

Not to me. Sounds like most people I deal with daily. The problem almost always comes down to this: If they unplug from the machine, what is waiting for them? What will give them hope? Marxism? Not in this culture. Socialism? Depends on how you define it (or spin it). Cynicism and despair? Probably right under the surface of their illusions, and this brings us back to the starting point.
