He expressly said in the Nation fairly recently that if it came to a conflict between the interests of Israel and that of the US, he'd put Israel first. No one said anything that provoked this confession either. So I am only taking the Alterboy at his word. jks

" I’ll believe in the significance of Bush’s Middle East peace efforts when he demands that Sharon start dismantling settlements. Until that happens, all of this talk will be another wasted opportunity and will leave the Palestinians feeling even more betrayed — and alienated — than before. I swear I hate the guy, really, but Arafat’s right. Sharon is playing Bush like BB or Buddy Guy with a Fender Strat."

How is that an "Israel firster" position?

The American "Israel firster" vs the Brit "America firster"? How tedious. However, even in his current supine state, I would bet on Hitchens to make cream cheese of the Alterboy. The Hitch once had speed, wit, and power. Alterboy never did. jks

ALTERMAN VS. HITCHENS TONIGHT

Watch Nation columnist and author Eric Alterman debate US foreign policy with ex-Nation columnist and author Christopher Hitchens tonight on PBS's Charlie Rose Show. The program airs at 11:00pm in most cities.

Check local listings or the show's website for details:
