The Coney Island Avenue Project has reason to believe that a mass deportation of Pakistani detainees in Hudson County Jail in New Jersey may happen on Sunday night. The deportations in the past have taken place in the middle of the night when activists and families are unable to be at the detention centers to provide assistance or fight for detaineesrights.
There have been sweeps of detentions of Pakistani men and since 9-11 and thousands of Arabs, Muslims and South Asians have been detained. In the name of national security immigrants have been selectively rounded up and detained, denied their rights and demonized.
The US government has refused to provide the people with an official accounting of who is being held, or what they are being held for. We do know however from the families of detainees, their lawyers, activists, journalists etc. that the vast majority of people are being held for minor immigration violations.
The Coney Island Project is asking people to be on standby as emergency response networks to travel to Hudson County Jail to voice our opposition to such blatantly illegal, cruel and racist policies of the INS.
