it always happens. support spiked for nixon when hell broke for him, too. 
as doug pointed out, it's a temporary response which masks the complexity 
of people's reactions. i mentioned this awhile ago, there's no reason to 
back down. we should have been prepared for it and simply moved on and kept 
up the struggle the best way we know how.
