Which means exactly what? That Blair's going to suggest making Tommy Franks a field marshall? That's what Hitler gave the encircled Gen. Von Paulus -- a promotion -- because he had nothing to offer in terms of useful support.

Minutes ago Bush and Blair were on the tube, saying in effect: "No more Mr. Nice Guys!" Or as the NY Times puts it: "With a new intensity of anger and determination, President Bush and Prime Minister Tony Blair of Britain pledged again today that the regime of Saddam Hussein will be destroyed, no matter how long it takes."

As things are shaping up, that means Iraqi *society* will be destroyed, however long it takes. The Bush-Blair stance is the embodiment of fanaticism defined as redoubling your efforts having lost sight of your goal. If the problems the US/UK now face in Iraq include heavy popular resistance, they will accomplish nothing by racheting up the agony with more "precision" strikes that amount to doing surgery with a chainsaw.

The pretense of conducting a war of "liberation" becomes ever more ludicrous.
