I can probably say that because I'm not a pet person. It's not that I don't like animals; I just don't like domesticated animals -- so my sense of how they could be "like family" is uninformed at best. I agree that she was just an image, but there was a lot of emotion invested in that image...which is how I see people investing emotion in their pets. The analogy was not meant to be disrespectful to pet-owners. I apologize.
