"Dr Becker, of Chicago University, speaking at an international conference at the university, estimated that paying $15,000 (£9,300) for a kidney would increase transplants by one third.
The body needs only one kidney to function and many patients receive organs donated by partners and other relatives.
Dr Becker, who won the Nobel Prize for economics in 1992, has also calculated that offering donors $32,000 (£20,000) for part of their liver would see such transplants soar by 60 per cent."
