Often, and only partly facetiously, I would tell students in lit
classes that if they ever found themselves at 1:00 a.m. with a 10 page
lit paper due the next morning at 10:00, they should put at the top of
the page, "Appearance and Reality in [author, title, collection of
titles, ets.]" The paper would write itself, and while it would be all
tautologies, the tautologies would be concealed sufficiently to earn
them at least a B-.

(It might not work too well for the _Iliad_, but it would certainly work
with any other text of the last 2500 years or so. It would work with the
Iliad if one pretended it was an Aristotelian tragedy.)
