Seattle, Westlake Park   Greetings All,   The Tacoma Leonard Peltier Support Group wishes to express its strong support for the June 2, 2003 Rally and March For Liberty and ask that all of our supporters who are able, to come out for the event. The rally and march is being organized to expose and protest the Law Enforcement Intelligence Unit (LEIU) seminar being held in Seattle, June 2-6. Below is a piece of information on LEIU taken from the web site of the organizing committee for the rally and march.   “The Law Enforcement Intelligence Unit (LEIU) is holding its annual training seminar in Seattle, June 2–6. The LEIU is a secretive intelligence network that links the intelligence squads of almost every major public law enforcement agency in the United States and Canada. It’s a private club, and hence not held accountable to elected officials and not subject to the Freedom of Information Act. Big Brother is coming to Seattle, and you should be there to greet them.”   Peltier supporters are very aware of the abuse of intelligence units, as there are thousands of intelligence files on Leonard Peltier that, after 27 years, Leonard’s defense still has not be able to get. Those files that Leonard’s defense was able to get showed that the FBI fabricated evidence to gain the conviction of Leonard. Tacoma LPSG is aware that intelligence units have spied on the activities of northwest Peltier supporters and their organizations and keeps intelligence files on us. We found out once when applying for a march permit in Seattle that the police had intelligence on our events through out the northwest.   Just last January when we were organizing our Feb. Tacoma Peltier March and Rally, a member of the Tacoma Police Intelligence Unit called me up and it was clear they had extensive files on the Tacoma LPSG and its events. This person wanted information on our march, who was going to speak and what they were going to speak about, if there were going to be anti-war people at our event, asked questions about our members and other such questions. I gave him no information, my answer to each question was “I don’t know”, but I let him continue to ask questions to see how far it would go.   Intelligence units gather information on those people who disagree with the government and they use that information to try to suppress dissent. They have been known to pressure employers to fire people, they have been known to pressure landlords to evict people, they have been known to plant false stories in the media, intelligence information has been used to keep people from crossing borders (I have been stopped from crossing the U.S./Canadian border five times at five different locations) and they have been known to frame people up on false charges. The federal, state and local intelligence units are the foundation of a police state. Now with all the new repressive laws being passed, this makes the intelligence units even more powerful and dangerous to the freedom of the people of this land. LEIU is a key player in the police state.   The abuse of our freedom by intelligence units is something that connects all social activists. One good example of this is the history of FBI agent Richard Held who was part of the FBI’s COINTELPRO. He was involved in the FBI program in L.A. that lead to the murder of Black Panthers Bunchy Carter and Jon Huggins. He was involved on the cover-up of the murder of Chicago Black Panthers Fred Hampton and Mark Clark. He was involved in reign of terror against San Diego social activists and worked with the rightwing Minutemen and then helped create the Secret Army Organization, among those targeted were Black Panthers, anti-war activists and the local alternative media including the San Diego Street Journal (which was an IWW union shop and I was a part of that). He was involved in the FBI program at Pine Ridge including the frame-up of Leonard Peltier. And later he was involved in the bombing of Judi Bari.   We have direct concerns about the LEIU. In one report on LEIU it stated that it had intelligence information on members of the American Indian Movement and thus we are sure that it holds files on Leonard Peltier. In the categories in intelligence information of LEIU one is called “tribal”. Thus LEIU keeps intelligence files on the indigenous tribes of this land. This information has filed in a gap in the research we did on the racist anti-tribal campaign, which is backed by rightwing organizations, non- profit foundations and corporations that back the so-called “wise use” movement. We have wondered where the anti-tribal campaign has gotten their intelligence information of the indigenous tribes and now it seems very likely it could have come from LEIU, which has corporate sponsorship.   LEIU has been and continues to be a key player in the abuse of social activists of this land. For that reason all social activists of every type must realize this and understand that we must unite together and resist the police state and that the planned Rally and March For Liberty June 2, is a very important step in the survival from political repression in this land. Peltier supporters and support groups have been talking about the LEIU seminar since last February. Because of internal reorganization and other reasons, we have not been able to organize directly around this important event, but still we strongly support the anti-LEIU events and ask that all our supporters do the same. Thank you.   In The Spirit Of Total Resistance Arthur J. Miller Tacoma Leonard Peltier Support Group P.O.
