There is a story in Boccaccio about two friends in Paris, one Christian the other Jewish. The Christian had tried for years to convert his friend. Then the friend had occasion to visit Rome, and the Christian thought all was lost: after seeing Rome no one would convert to Christianity. But when the Jewish friend returned, he was ready to convert. Why? his friend asked. The reply was that an institution led by such evil and corrupt people would collapse if it were not true.
Most students were never able to make sense of that story.
