The way Dean said his scripted line about the confederate flag in the "debate" was a mistake and he should have immediately apologized and clarified what he was trying to say. His biggest error, pointed out to him, was that by not immediately saying "ooops, not what I meant to say" was that he was waving his flag of White privilege in a way that demonstrated considerable arrogance and substantial racial insensitivity.
Anyone can make a mistake. I don't think he was intentionally doing a Sista Soulja move.
Dean's earlier versions of the flubbed line (as Doug points out) were actually quite good.
