Jaffa military tribunal convicts Ben-Artzi of refusal to follow orders

The Jaffa military tribunal convicted conscientious objector Yonatan Ben-Artzi on Wednesday of refusing to follow orders, but accepted Ben-Artzi’ s self-definition as a pacifist.
Ben-Artzi’s attorney, Michael Sfarad, said it is now up to the chief military prosecutor to consider the three judges’ recommendation to transfer the case back to the Conscience Committee, to which Ben-Artzi had originally appealed for an exemption from military service.
Those who refuse to serve in the Israel Defense Forces for reasons of conscience must submit to interviews with the Conscience Committee, which then decides whether or not to exempt the petitioners from service.
After a decision is reached, said Sfarad, Ben-Artzi’s sentence can be determined.
Ben-Artzi has served seven months in jail and another nine months in detention for his refusal to serve in the IDF.
