The local newsrag is doing a series this week on the food
business and related issues such as advertising and
health. Today's segment looks at marketing to children and
the upsurge in childhood obesity. The article quotes a
Canadian study that found that "kids who watched more than
three hours of TV daily were 50 percent more likely to be
obese than those who watched less than two hours a day."
Not a very helpful statistic, given the usual questions
about cause & effect in such findings. But the seeming
dearth of physical activity (not to mention the increasing
lack of Phys Ed in schools - Illinois is the only state
that requires it now) and rampant marketing in every
conceivable venue would seem to be high on the list of
culprits.
