This reminds me of the novel and film "The Lost Honor of Katharina Blum"

which is a take on the journalistic practices of the German tabloid
Bild-Zeitung.  In the story, the protagonist shoots and kills a reporter
who drags her name through the mud, while pundits decry that act as an
assault on freedom of speech.
