Societies differ dramatically in norms and values about competition. In some human societies competition is a good thing ("competition brings out the best in people"). In other human societies, competition is a bad thing ("competition undermines social interdependence"). The fact that you can't imagine a functioning human society without competition is a testament to the effective, thorough socialization you've received in a society that values competition.
