>On a Tuesday afternoon in October 1973, a motorist in the New York area
>tuned his radio to WBAI-FM and heard a 12-minute monologue by comedian
>George Carlin called "Filthy Words."
And despite the FCC's recent ruling that it's ok to use the words as long as they don't refer directly to sexual or excretory activity - isn't that a beautiful distinction? it's the signified not the signifier that counts! - WBAI policy is not to use the words. Station management still fears the FCC might hammer us, even though it's ok for Bono to say "fucking great" on TV.
