"...One could argue-- even invoking Marx-- that the period of capitalism and industrialization is a _necessary_ phase on the path to socialism..."

one should...socialized production being controlled by the producers, making it possible for all to enjoy the benefits of that production,etc...didn't marx go on at some length to make the case that once we understood that we were making the stuff and didn't need owner-caps to rule that process of production, we could use that stuff to make a better life for everyone?

our hunter-gatherer ancestors may have worked together in order to survive, but they had nothing to do with the creation of the animals or vegetables...primitive communism, the first phase of human survival, was/is to become a highly - both industrially and morally - developed, sophisticated communism, under the direction of those socialized producers...

we wouldn't have this opportunity without the horrid creations of this economic system, since we wouldn't possess the wonderful creations, mechanical, mental and moral, that we have developed through its/our history...

whether technology is biased, neutral, arbitrary or whatever is an interesting argument or discussion in a classroom, but the thing to do is use the tech for transforming the bad into the good, when possible, and dumping the shit when it can't be used for anything good...nuclear and other anti-personnel bombs can do nothing but kill people, but blasting holes in the earth in order to sink bridge suppports can bring people together, just as corporate televison and phones can help sell lots of crap, or bring people into contact with one another...etc...
