Oh, the reason why I was interested in the provenance of "cookie" is that I'm teaching an hour/week in my daughter's 5th grade class. My personal objective in doing this is to make them fall in love with language. Joanna

Well, shit. Fuck computers.

There are so many more fascinating places to find fun in language. Kids games with language are great sources, chants for jumping rope, tongue twisters the fail with obscenities or sound like nonsense, logic games that force you to say exactly what you don't mean (when did you stop beating your wife?), jokes like why did the chicken cross the road... Rap is another example or it can be, minus the pussy this and bitch that... Nonsense rhymes like Lewis Carrol, or poetry (Donne, Shakespeare, Elliot (Book of Practical Cats), Yeats (Crazy Jane?), Joyce (Finningan's Wake) Beckette (Lucky's soliloquy)..., songs, dances like la cucaracha(?)......

I just asked a client who came into the shop about were to find a book on jump rope rhymes. She remembered seeing one at Marcus Books (MLK and West MacArthur)...

Try this. Go put on the Buena Vista Social Club CD, listen to Chan Chan and try to sing the refrain. It's a tongue twister in Spanish, or at least it is for me.
