[lbo-talk] "My hobby is shopping." Adbusters in Japan

I seem to remember "Buy Nothing Day" taking a bit of a drubbing on this list a while back. Nonetheless, I think this article is interesting and Adbuster-like culture jamming would be very useful in Japan for a variety of reasons. While bubble-era rampant consumerism is giving way to "100 yen Shops" and increasing homelessness and underemployment, Japan still has remnants of the gift economy and a kind of "organic socialism".

The article also mentions this: "And perhaps Japan is actually ahead of its developed country cousins as its per capita ecological footprint is “roughly half” of a Canadian’s or American’s." A positive facet, no doubt but this is due in large part to the impossibility to use cars for daily commutes, strictly enforced recycling laws, and reduced living space.
