Surely one reason must be that growing numbers of US respondents communicate only by grunts and gestures. I base that on the level of public intellect shown in the Gallup poll findings you posted just prior to this, e.g.: "In response to a separate question, almost 6 in 10 Americans (58%) agree that the recent attacks against U.S. soldiers and civilians in Iraq show that the United States must intensify its military efforts."
