Sure, there are numerous caveats to be kept in mind when drawing lessons
about imperialism from the mid 19th century for the early 21st. Most of
them are familiar to the debates of this list. But Tocqueville's
colonial apologetics, however French the original brand, read like
familiar pitches for the American export of democracy. Heck, Lazare
credits Tocqueville with first establishing the "US copyright on the
D-word."
