Most of the dollar stores here were family-owned businesses run by various asian and middle-eastern immigrant families, reminescent of the old five and dimes from our childhood, where you could find just about everything and nothing all in one trip.

How could I ever forget the name of five and dime of my childhood: Wackers. Can't make this stuff up.

But now, the uber-chains are moving in with the 99 cent store, Dollar America, etc. The mom and pop stores are starting to fold. The chain stores are on almost every corner.

The other corners are being filled with Cash Advance/Payday Loan and Adult Novelty/Lingerie stores.

Signs o' the times in suburbia...
