has anyone seen his film, _taurus_, based on the final
days of lenin? there's a russian language version at
kim's video in nyc, and, given the sensuous, richly
cinematic nature of sokurov's films, maybe that
doesn't matter so much (although it's interesting to
me, sight unseen, to have so lyrical a filmmaker
examine so rigorous a materialist...). i, too, was
captivated by _russian ark_ and _mother and son_ is
easily one of the most hauntingly beautiful films i've
ever seen. it's also heavy as an anvil and could
invite parody relatively easily (a la the
filmmaker/countryman he most closely resembles, andrei
tarovsky), were it not so surrealistically gorgeous
and dealing with psycho-naturo-familial essentials on
an order freud -- and jung! -- could, literally, only
dream of...
