Lately, I've begun to see the Dems and GOP in terms of the old Frog and Scorpion fable, in which the Dems have repeatedly carried or gone along with the GOP on their backs across treacherous waters, e.g., passing the Pat. Act, Iraq, only to be stung midway, much to the ignorant surprise of the Dems, who repeatedly forget the nature of the GOP.

I believe it's in the nature of the GOP, or at least it's current incarnation, to be bullies, elists, separatists and, well, just plain nasty. Let's be thankful for that. At least we can see the opposition in all of it's ugly glory.

But what would happen if the GOP, having lost this one to Kerry, decided to take another approach after the election? I'd suggest that if they cut the nastiness, embrace Kerry as one of their own and muddy the already muddied waters even further between Dems and the GOP, then they'd have an excellent shot at moving this country towards their own brand of conservatism even more. Kerry already has a record of goin'along to get along, and on some key points there is infinite room for bargaining and compromise, making Kerry another Republican-lite Democrat look like a vintage 2000 Shrub Bush. And bringing along a GOP candidate who then is spun to look better than Kerry and just a little bit more to the right, becomes the bait and switch in the third year of a Kerry term, at which point the GOP returns to it's nasty, attack dog, dirty tricks self. The standards of conservatism (their version, anyway) becomes more entrenched and more acceptable to the sleepy masses.

Or, as my dad used to say, "Kill 'em with kindness, then kill 'em."

After all, it's in their nature.
