Theater Goers Met by Demonstrators New Yorkers are used to chaos, but some GOP delegates got an extra dose Sunday of the city’s in-your-face attitude when protesters decided to confront convention-goers in the theater district.
The Republican National Convention host committee treated each delegation to a Broadway show Sunday afternoon, and as the delegates exited theaters, they were greeted by shouting protesters. Police officers attempted to block the protesters from harassing delegates, and the evening resulted in numerous arrests.
Activists also showed up at the delegates’ hotels in the area. They shouted at them, cursed at them, and told them to go home.
Two delegates being chased by press cameras tried to hide their faces as they waited to cross the street. Police officers escorted the terrified-looking couple out of the way and argued with the photographers about obeying orders.
Josh Schrei, a disgruntled New Yorker who held an anti-President Bush and Vice President Cheney sign in the heart of Time Square, said the GOP made a mistake in choosing New York for the convention. “It’s not a Republican town,” he said. — Stephanie C. Weintraub ===================================
