secondly, the article described them as "white, conservative, christians". White evangelicals comprise about 40% of the population. They comprise 22% of the electorate and, of them, 75% of white, evangelical christians voted for Bush.
In addition, there is a vast literature on voting demographics within which one can examine this particular subset -- or any other subset.
In the article, the author discusses the history of christian involvement in U.S. politics. He places his discussion of today's christian conservatives in that context -- so he's not "sneering" at religion. One would hardly expect an author in The Black Commentator to "sneer" at people who are religious!
