China may produce GM rice
China may become the first country in the world to operate the commercial production of genetically modified rice.
Four varieties of genetically modified rice were submitted for approval to the recently concluded Biology Safety meeting, sponsored by Ministry of Agriculture.
The project leader and biologist, Professor Zhu Zhen, says that the promotion of GM rice is important for China, a country with 1.3 billion people whose main food is rice.
Zhu Zhen's team has conducted six years of field experiments on two pest resistant and two disease resistant varieties.
However, worries remain that the GM agricultural products may cause potential damage to health and environment.
Experts say the policymakers should be extremely careful about whether GM products are sold in the near future.
