New Yorkers are infamously insular and provincal and pround of it, as the well-known Saul Steinberg NYer cover, A View Of the World From Ninth Avenue. I have many stories, being married to one (a New Yorker), but here's just one. When we moved to Chicago, my MiL came out to visit, and we drove her down to the Loop to go to a show or something. My MiL, who had only lived outside NY for two years in grad school (Rochester), looked around at some of the greatest urban architecture in the world and pronounced, "This isn't like New York. It's boring." "Yeah," I snarled, "and it's flat too!"
