Perhaps, but that does not have to be an either/or proposition. Unlike religion, where praising one big santa claus in the sky automatically renounces allegiance to all other spooks, in politics you can show support to more than one party - depending on the strategic configuration of political forces. Thus, you can vote Democratic in the presidential election and organize for the GP at the same time or even vote green in the local election.
Much of the debate on this subject reminds me of a religious identity crisis - are you a Catholic, a Jew, or Muslim - pick one because you cannot be all of them at the same time. I just do not view things in the same way - why not being all of them?
