Sony sees sales in China up 60% in 2003-04

Reuters Shanghai, February 25

Japan's Sony Corp said on Wednesday it expects sales in China to grow 60 per cent from a year ago to $1.6 billion in the year ending March 2004, helped by brisk sales of digital cameras and other electronics.

In the longer-term, Sony China chairman Kei Kodera told Reuters in an interview that it aimed to quadruple exports from its Chinese operations to one trillion yen ($9.24 billion) by 2008-09.

By the year ending March 2009, Sony also aims to boost its sales in China to around $9 billion, up from $1 billion in the year ended March 2003.

In an effort to raise production in China, Kodera said he aims to boost research, designing and development staff in China to around 1,000 by 2008-09, compared with the current level of "several hundred."
