Forget the stuff about self-esteem. But is it all numbskullery? Is there not something about the racialised structure of power in the world? And when combined with the fact that vast numbers of people are believers to one degree or another, does the imagery, derived from centuries of European art and representation, have no import, no consequence?
I come from a place where brandy is, in the local languages, the "master's drink", where caucasians are the "master race", where some forms of evangelical christianity dress up the kids in white, with pom-poms and cymbals, hopping around in cheer-leader style, and local musical instruments are those of the devil to be supplanted by guitars and drumkits, where every christmas we hear "sleigh bells in the snow" and "dream of a white christmas" in 85+ degree weather the year round.
