NZ-ers are fond of making the comparison between themselves and the
Japanese, both being developed societies which occupy islands roughly
similar in size, natural resources and climate.
There are, of course, significant differences, such as population (and its
implications for manufacturing etc., in terms of the internal market) and
the relatively large class of small crop farmers in Japan (as opposed to the
NZ norm of medium-sized livestock enterprises).
