It's not kosher to compare different pollsters across time. Different pollsters use different wording, sampling techniques, weighting, etc. The kosher thing to do would be to compare Gallup 2000 with Gallup 2004, or Some Other Pollster 2000 with that same Other Pollster 2004. I use Gallup because they've been around a long long time, poll frequently, and have a nice website.
