The rise of Islamization in Iraqi resistance (as in the Palestinian resistance) is way more complex than the search for funding. While funding may play a role but the whole dynamic of Islamization has a lot do with the discovery of Islam in that part of the world as a site of resistance against imperialism. Those of us who belong to the secular Third World Left do not approve of this militant revivalism, but it is also important to understand the historical trajectories through which this phenomenon has emerged. Actually this understanding is the only way through which the Left in the Muslim societies can re-capture the political initiatives. Islamic militancy is largely a response to economic marginalization, political disempowerment, and cultural dislocation. A frustration with secular discourses such a nationalism and marxism (as in Palestine) are important pieces of the puzzle.
