I believe at least a couple studies have shown that the average jihadi 
is well-educated and a member of the middle class.  Desperation has 
nothing to do with the crimes they commit.

--a well educated person and well off person can think of themselves as 
desparate in terms of resolving certain issues.  whether or not 
their 'solution' is correct is not necessary, but their desparation can 
and often is legitimately felt.  The desparation about occupation of 
Saudi Arabia, middle east occupations, globalization, etc.are widely 
felt in parts of much of the world, as is the sentiment that legal 
and/or acts of peaceful disobedience are fruitless.  The US support of 
governments that reinforce that belief. The US's own repressive 
attitude toward protests against neoliberalism on a global scale only 
further bolsters such beliefs.
