Nader can have all kinds of principles because he's not a realistic contender in the election.
Sadly, a candidate that actually has a chance of winning has to run a professional campaign, and campaign professionals seldom pay much attention to what leftists would consider principles (unless they can advertise them in a way that appeals to 50%+ of the likely voters).
