That makes a lot of sense, because in the situation you hypothesize there is not the radical asymmetry of available force as in the romantic image of fighting off the cops. And in conditions of high political tension, guns in the home as a protection agains vigilante action (e.g., some drunken bums who decide to visit the home of a local red) can make sense.
If politics in the u.s. ever moves towards serious violence, the first few years will involve death squads, not pitched battles.
