doug, you've hit the nail on the head. i share your concern that the nation will return to its somnambulant state if the dems return to power. just as it did during the clinton era despite the fact wild bill was signing off on "reform" legislation the republicans lusted after for decades, worked his tail off for NAFTA, refused to confront republicans over judicial nominations, etc. some people are positively nostalgic for the "big dog," my almost favorite liberal republican.

there was no serious work after 2000. 9/11 is being used as the excuse for that mistake. people hoping to see shrub loose in the fall still fruitlessly obsess about ralph "gotcha" nader. at this late date, there's talk about impeaching shrub when the most apt targets of impeachment lie on the supreme court. there's still no viable third party for the left/liberals rejected/taken for granted by the democrats. and on and on.

chuck0's observation points out what a good job the right has done in moving the nation right. and how the dems, as thomas frank's book points out, have helped. as has the pitiful economy, making the corp grip on people's lives even stronger. the national monologue, as well as the center of this list, reflects that.

about all that will wake people up is a military draft. and the possibility that people will begin receiving tax bills for the military fiasco the nation's indulged in. all the terrorists have to do is sit back and watch us self destruct.
